The Bocas del Toro Archipelago

The Bocas del Toro Archipelago is a group of islands located in the northwest part of Panama in the Laguna of Chirique. The archipelago is near the border with Costa Rica. It offers a perfect mixture of the Caribbean beauty with its nature and history with cultural traditions. This archipelago also splits or separates the Almirante Bay and Laguna de Chiriqui from the Caribbean Sea. It is located in particular in the Bocas del Toro District of the Bocas del Toro Province. Its major city is the Bocas del Toro which is also called the Bocas town on the Colon Island. The islands are easily reached by water taxis and private boats.

The archipelago consists of nine islands, 52 keys and 200 small islets. Among these islands, the largest and the most developed is the Colon Island. The estimated population of the Bocas del Toro Archipelago is approximately 9000 people. There are plenty of hotels, restaurants, flairs for ecotourism and other adventures. It also boasts its white sand beaches its Caribbean side.

The island offers its locales and tourists loads of attractions, with good rain forests with lots of flora and fauna, white sand beaches, crystal clear waters, Indian villages and the national marine park. The national marine park is in charge or protecting the ecosystem and national resources within the boundaries of the Bocas del Toro archipelago. It also adds interest to visitors because of its Caribbean architecture, the local cuisine and dishes and their festivities.

The Panama’s weather is pretty warm while in Bocas del Toro, temperatures differ depending on the location or region. It has a tropical climate with temperatures ranging from 70 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit. The archipelago experiences low humidity with light temperature nights. The rainy season in Bocas is experienced from December to January and again on June to August, but this season is not enough to ruin anyone’s vacation. The dry season is during February to May.

The major islands in the archipelago include the Isla Bastimentos, Isla Carenero or Careening Cay, Isla Colon, Isla Cristobal, Isla Popa and Isla Solarte. The archipelago also includes lots of small islands and cays.

The Bastimentos Islamd is located 10 minutes away from the town of Bocas del Toro. Bastimentos, a small town and is the center of activity in the island has a Caribbean architecture and has no roads.

The Careening Cay is located a few hundred meters from the Colon Island. The island got its name from ‘careening’, which means to incline a ship on one side for cleaning or repairing.

The Colon Island is the northern most and the main archipelago in the island. This is one of Panama’s main tourist’s destinations which also have a strong boating community.

The Cristobal Island is in the southern part of Colon and is mostly deforested. The famous destination in this island is Dolphin bay, where the dolphins usually are the main attraction to locales and tourists.

The Solarte Island is located between the Columbus and Bastimentos islands. It is also one of the smaller islands of the archipelago. The famous and the most visited place here is the Hospital Point. This island is also famous for its diving and scuba diving sites.

Island of Panama

Panama is has one of the best geographic locations in the world. It links and gives connection between the North and South American countries. It also consists of several islands which are subdivided into smaller islets. Some of these islets have no names. Panama has one thousand islands on the Pacific side and six hundred islands on the Caribbean side. Among the six hundred islands along the Caribbean coastline, about two-thirds of these are located east of its capital and most are at the end of the isthmus. Panama’s islands have always been a frequent location for the popular American reality show, “Survivor” which is not surprising why many showed interest on them.

The islands of Panama are among the most beautiful islands in the whole world and most of these islands were formed because of the volcanic activities. Here are some of the famous and most visited islands in Panama that are worth visiting and shout not be missed:

The San Blas Islands

The San Blas Islands is situated at the northeast of the mainland. This is one the most popular island in the country. In San Blas, there are more than 200 islets here but only half of them or 113 have names and the other 100 islets are nameless. Almost 30 islands a wholly and entirely made of corals. In San Blas, you can enjoy diving, snorkeling and fishing in this island.

The Colon Island

The Colon Island is in the northern-most and in the Bocas del Toro region and is one of the most beautiful and one of the largest archipelago of islands and is the country’s biggest tourist attraction. It is near the Caribbean Sea and the perfect island for nature lovers. In this island, the most famous are beachfront hotels, restaurants and discotheques and also the residential districts. When you are here, you can visit other nearby islands through private boats or renting a water taxi.

The Boca Brava Island

The Island of Boca Brava is located in the Gulf of Chirique in the Pacific coast of Panama. This is a virtually uninhabited island where the marine national park is also located. The Boca Brava is a small island yet there is something for everyone here, may it be for relaxing or participating in activities like diving and snorkeling or riding and surfing. Also, the island is a good spot for birders and those who enjoy wildlife watching since it homes to hundreds of monkeys and turtles and raccoons. Located here are Linarte, Las Ventanas and Saino which are among the uninhabited islands and has crystal clear waters.

The Pearl Island

The Pearl Island also known as Archipelago de las Perlas is located 50 miles from the capital of Panama, the Panama City. It has a group or 100 or more island and many of them are small and uninhabited. Its largest island are the San Jose and Isla del Rey. The island has always been featured by the reality TV show, Survivor. The Israeli version of Survivor also featured the island and also the BBC TV series, The Real Swiss Family Robinson.

Beaches of Panama

Panama offers both its locales and tourists with a lot of choices when it comes to its beaches. It has both the Atlantic and Pacific coast with hundreds of islands and islets. The cost of living in Panama is very much lower that in the United States and Europe and is one of the lowest in all Central and South America. Consumers would never be disappointed or dissatisfied in this country.

Panama is surprisingly a very safe country. Crimes in the country are very low specifically with its tourism crimes.

Tourist friendly

Panamanians are very welcoming to tourists and foreigners visiting and living in the country which makes it easier to transition for foreigners when they moved in to Panama. The people in Panama are also considered and labeled as one of the friendliest people in the world. They also speak English which adds benefits to tourists and foreigners. Being the crossroads of the world, Panamanians are use to or understand and appreciate foreigners.

Panama has full of comforts and treats. It has lots of classy and secure cities with lots of fascinating things to do.
